The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik and their partners.

This is a Studio 180 Design tool challenge! Studio 180 Design designs and markets quilt toolspatterns and companion products to make quilting easier and more fun. Their tools add accuracy and precision for the best results in all quilting projects. I was introduced to Studio 180 Designs in 2023 and grown as a quilter each time I use one. These tools are well made and come with great instructions for both the right-handed and the left-handed user. Plus their You Tube channel provides more instructions!! The Corner Beam and Split Rects tools were used for this project.

I had never made a Corner Beam unit before, so I had to go with larger squares until I gained confidence. I also cut out Corner Beam pieces from the beautiful Jubilee collection. What is fun about these blocks are the variety of ways to assemble interesting blocks.

My new Oliso Project Iron was perfect for this Island Batik challenge! Love the carrying bag that came with; perfect for small blocks and as a travel iron for Quilt Retreats and Guild Sew Days. The smooth Diamond Ceramic-Flow™ soleplate, detailer tip, and dual steam, the Project iron presses flat seams and impeccably sharp creases, efficiently removing wrinkles. It heats rapidly and maintains accurate fabric temperatures, and there is a 30-minute vertical and 10-minute horizontal standby mode with safety shut-off.

Before I started sewing I cleaned my Brother Dreamweaver bobbin housing and switched out the Schmetz needle. Schmetz had provided needles and a note pad in the Island Batik Ambassador’s 2025 January challenge delivery. This pad came in handy to keep track of the Jubilee collection used for the project.

Aurifil provided three spools to match this collection, red, blue, and teal. Family owned and operated, Aurifil’s success has been made possible thanks to their diverse mix of genders, religions, races, ages, physical abilities, linguistic differences, socio-economic statuses, and cultural backgrounds. Aurifil understands that their voice and, more importantly, their actions are critical to progressing positive change in the world. The picture below is the table runner made from Jubilee collection leftover squares after completing the 4 table runners made.

Because I had never tried the corner beam pattern before I opted to make 6-inch finished blocks. For this rookie, the Corner Beam tool was easy to use after watching the Studio 180 You Tube videos and reading the instructions. I cut more than enough pattern pieces to ensure I had close-to-perfect blocks.

I have been opting to use my Brother Dreamweaver’s seldom used stitches instead of repeating my favorites. The Dreamweaver has the option to create your own designer stitches by changing the length and width of the stitches; above are two examples.

The Jubilee collection has very luscious colors, my favorite of the collection was the blue navy Poppies Floral which I used for the reversible back of the five table runners I made.

Since I cut out extra pieces to learn the Corner beam tool and compiling the block, I had leftover blocks which I never abandon. Additionally, there were leftover triangles when cutting the center beam which became Split Rect units using the Split Rects tool. These were sewed together like piano key rectangles and added to the edges of three of the table runners.

The Corner Beam instructions provide a detailed step-by-step tutorial and there is a cutting chart that you use each time you use your Corner Beam ruler. Four Corner Beam units made the Kite block. The longest table runner included four kite blocks. I used Island Batik’s crisp White solid as my background.

Great that you used the leftovers and made more pretty table runners. Specialty stitches are wonderful to use to do the quilting.
