All 2024 Island Batik Ambassadors are donating the June 2024 challenge quilts to Sleep in Heavenly Peace in conjunction with the Quilts Across America initiative led by Studio 180 Design! All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering top-notch beds to children and families in need. Quilts Across America is a program that relies on the generosity of quilters everywhere to provide a quilt with each bed that is delivered by Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Quilts Across America was initiated by Studio 180 Design and Tucker University in July 2023.
The Island Batik fabric collections used for this challenge were the glorious Fairy Floss, Naturally Neutrals and Tantalizing Teals. I love this combination! Island Batik provided a 42 piece ten-inch square stack pack of the entire collection of Fairy Floss and 2.5-inch strip packs of the Neutrals and the Teals. Island Batik also generously provided 2 yards of the Tantalizing Teal, Lagoon, paired with the Fairy Floss collection in the surprise package sent with our January 2024 shipment. See my unpacking video on YouTube.

Once the fabric was laid out, I had to decide on my original design. I found the above Jolly Bar Merinque Quilt free pattern on Pinterest and I really liked the juxtaposition of the blocks, and I did think a child would too. My intention was to pair the Fairy Floss HRTs with the lights of the Naturally Neutral Collection and the dark of the Tantalizing Teal, Lagoon, to create a composition reminiscent of moon shadows. I always have a consistent goal to not waste fabric.

Before setting off on completing my design, I watched the Split Rect Deb Tucker videos available online prior to using the Split Rect tool which were very helpful. Love the Tuckerize method! I have never been an expert in HRTs but using the Studio 180 Split Rect tool I gained new confidence. After all those swipes of the rotary cutter, I ended up with three sizes of HRTs:
- 3-inch by 6-inch
- 3.5-inch by 7-inch
- 4-inch by 8-inch
The 3 by 6 inch HRTs took center stage framed by a 3-inch sashing of the Lagoon and a 2-inch sashing of the Tantalizing Teal, Parakeet. such a wonderful pairing–Island Batik Fairy Floss and the Island Batik Tantalizing Teals! The 3.5-inch by 7-inch HRTs came next followed by a 2.5-inch sashing of Parakeet and a 2-inch of Lagoon. The 4-inch by 8-inch HRTs framed by a 2-inch Parakeet sashing finalized the design.

After my original design was complete and off to the longarmer for quilting, there were some abandoned blocks remaining. I always have the propensity to use my project leftovers, so I had fun creating the table runner below. I used three different stitches available on my Brother Dreamweaver to quilt/thread paint using three different selections from the Piece and Quilt Colors 50wt collection from Aurifil designed by Christa Quilts (Christa Watson) with a Schmetz 75/11 Quilting Needle adding some Island Batik Plum applique leaves to compliment the fabrics from the Fairy Floss collection.

The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik. I appreciate the support of Island Batik and their partners including Hobbs Batting and Oliso.

Moonshadow was wonderfully quilted by Sue DeLange of Algonac, Michigan.

I will release the instructions for the Moonshadow shortly. Be sure to check out what the other Island Batik Ambassadors did for this challenge. I love this group of creatives!
