My vision was to use autumn colors with a nod to berry hues. The North Carolina Star is a gorgeous block, and I cut about 4 full blocks to start and set that aside while I determined my off-the-cuff design. I started with a twelve-inch square of Island Batik Cornsilk. Then using the Island Batik Morris Tiles collection of precut ten-inch squares, I used my Accuquilt GO! to cut out a variety of applique options with the Accuquilt Fall Medley die. The Fall Medley die is about 5 inches, so the ten-inch precut Morris Tiles squares were perfect to obtain double cuts.

The Morris Tiles Squares were first processed by pressing Pellon 725, Heavy-Duty Double-Sided Wonder Under. Before I started piecing the project, I switched out my Schmetz needle 80/12. I cannot say enough about the importance a new needle brings to a project! Always change your needle and clean your bobbin casing!!
Once my machine was ready, the Accuquilt GO! Fall Medley were appliqued in a circle, a pumpkin, leaves, and acorns on the twelve-inch Cornsilk square as shown above.

Four 4.5-inch squares were cut from the Island Batik Wheat Leaves Blenders on the Accuquilt GO! 8-inch Mix & Match Die One. Each square then was appliqued with a leaf from the Morris Tiles collection.
To tie the berry colors in, a cranberry and purple Morris Tiles 4.5 inch Squares were cut on the Accuquilt GO! 8-inch Mix & Match Die One and sewn together to form 8-inch squares and then each of these 8-inch squares also had appliqué shapes from the Accuquilt GO! Fall Medley die added.

I had to determine what 12-inch design blocks would be used to surround the center Island Batik Cornsilk square. From the North Carolina Star cut I used the large HSTs (Shape A) cut from Island Batik purple and cranberry solids and a brown blender. Adding Cornsilk 4.5 inch squares to those blocks created a simple yet perfect combination with the center square.
Added to those 4 squares were 2 each 12-inch squares of Island Batik Kings Castle Floral Brown Limestone and Floral Brown Jute, which were the appropriate choice within my stash that would work with the design/composition.
There was enough of those Kings Castle fabrics to cut 2.5-inch strips cut using the GO! Strip Cutter. These sashes were offset so the opposite color touched the edges of the other, meeting in the middle. The colors were just slightly different to create a warm contrast. Corner 2.5 squares were used from the Island Batik Wheat Leaves blenders and acorns appliqued on these.

Four Precut strips from two of the Island Batik Lavender collection each with a hint of light purple with leaf motifs were added to opposing sides.

It was time to add those berry-hued eight-inch squares at the corners. The Island Batik Morris Tiles appliques from the Fall Medley cuts were added to 8-inch wide panels of the Cornsilk. I added a three-inch sashing of an Island Batik Golden Blender all the way around. Finally, I added 5-inch sashing in Island Batik Orange Solid to the top and bottom of the quilt.
Using the orange solid for the backing and Hobbs Heirloom® Premium Wool batting, I dropped off the quilt at my longarmer, Diana Holthaus. The Wool provides superb insulation. The fiber breathes, allowing excess heat to disperse away from the body. One of the many benefits of wool is that it gives warmth without adding weight. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp. The tiny fibers trap air which creates insulation in this lightweight batt. In addition, wool batts are naturally mildew resistant and resistant to moth damage when quilted with cotton fabrics. This batting can be quilted up to 4” apart and has excellent loft retention. Heirloom® Wool batting is lightly resin bonded to provide stability and retard fiber migration and bearding.
